Ask yourself these questions…

1. When you play golf, do you just try to hit the ball as far as you can?

2. Do you play your tee shot planning for your second shot?

3. Do you consider which side of the fairway you want to play your second shot from?

4. Do you plan which area of the green you want to land your approach shot?

If you have answered yes to questions 2 – 4, then more than likely you have a low handicap. That being said, I am sure there are times when you pull a John Daly and “Grip It and Rip It”. It feels good, but when you look back on the results of that hole, did it make a big difference in the final number recorded?

For most amateurs, the answer to question 1 is yes, and no to questions 2 – 4. For those of you that fit into this group, there is something to gain from knowing your answers. Believe it or not, this is one of the easiest ways to improve your scores.

When you are watching golf on TV, do the pros always pull out a driver on a par 4 or 5? The answer is a resounding NO. Why do you think that is? They have taken time to analyze the hole to determine what will be the best golf club to use for the next shot.

Every golfer, even professionals have golf clubs that they favor. So when teeing off, if you can hit a shot that will allow you to use one of your favorite clubs for an approach shot, then why would you want to hit any other shot off the tee?

When you play golf taking the time to analyze the hole before you tee off, you take pressure off your game. By doing this, your mind is thinking about how to play the hole instead of thinking about the obstacles you want to avoid.

Now you should see why proper Golf Course management will help lower your scores by 7 to 12 strokes. Next time you are out on the golf course try analyzing each hole before you tee off and watch your scores improve!

score cardImproving Your Golf Game in the Off Season is not as hard as it may seem. You can lower your score 7 to 12 strokes this off season in a matter of weeks.

If you are like most golfers, your golf game suffers during the winter months. Either the weather is bad or there aren’t enough daylight hours to get out and practice or play.

If you live in a warmer climate you don’t have the weather issues that most of us deal with. Living in a colder climate creates a real challenge for golfers trying to maintain their golf game.

Over the last few years we have seen more indoor practice facilities open up and there are a few outdoor driving ranges that try and stay open during the winter, but weather tends to affect these facilities.  Practicing at the indoor centers can get expensive to use and in some cases require scheduling time to get access.

So what can we do to maintain our mid-season form during the winter months?Renegade Mental Golf

Here are some easy to do and cost effective ways to overcome this dilemma.

80% mental and the other 20% is in you headIn order to Play Your Best Golf, You Must Take Control of Your Golf Mindset.  Jokingly, I have always said, “Golf is 80% mental and the other 20% is in your head”.

If you think about it, this really isn’t that far off.  Our subconscious mind controls what our bodies do naturally and our conscious mind screws it all up.

One problem I think Golfers of all levels have, is trying to compete with the other players within their playing group, rather than playing within their own game.

I was watching an episode of the Big Break this week and the elimination challenge reminded me of the movie “ Tin Cup”.  It got me to thinking about how golfers tend to react when playing golf.

Here were 2 guys trying to avoid elimination from the show.  When the one put his second shot in the water, I thought, “why didn’t you lay up and rely on your short game?”  I got the impression that he had a strong short game.  I think he let what he thought the other player was going to do effect his decision.

You know what I mean, we have all been through it and probably still struggle with it. Maybe you’re playing in a tournament or you have been teamed up with someone new. The natural tendency, at least for men, is to try and out play the other person rather than play their normal game and challenge the course.
