Is Your Golf Game Suffering From a Bad Slice? – 6 Tips to Help You Eliminate Your Slice and Improve Your Game

One of the biggest problems I see with most amateur golfers is dealing with a slice. We’ve all experienced it and when it happens are first reaction is to tinker with our swing. Golfers will try just about anything to keep their golf ball in play. Reducing your slice or eliminating it all together is one challenge that can be corrected and will improve your game quickly.

We all know Golf is a game that is more mental than physical. Think about it, if you are like most golfers you will spend hours practicing and working on your golf swing at a driving range. When you head out to play a round of golf, you are excited and ready for a great day on the golf course. You are looking forward to putting into action the improvements you made at the driving range.

You step out to the first tee confident that you are going to drive the ball down the middle of the fairway and what happens? If you do hit a solid shot, your confidence goes up. If you hit a poor shot, more than likely a slice, your confidence goes down and you immediately start to think about that shot.

This problem is so common, even professional golfers deal with hitting a slice. They have an advantage over amateur golfers. They can recover from a bad shot and put their next shot back in play. Where as an errant shot for an amateur will more than likely lead to a bogey or worse.

So how do we go about correcting the slice?

  • It all starts with the right mental picture. If you don’t have a pre-shot routine, then you are doomed from the start. Take the time to visualize your shot. Where do you want your golf ball to end up? Do you want to be on the left side of the fairway or the right side? Give your mind something to focus on before you take your swing.
  • Don’t try and kill the ball. Taking a shorter more controlled back swing will help you to keep your balance and allow you to swing with a better tempo. You can even choke down on the club a little bit. You may sacrifice a few yards of distance, but playing your next shot from the short grass is worth it.
  • Make sure your alignment is right. This is one of those no brainers that we all take for granted. The problem is that most golfers think they are lined up correctly, but are usually lined up in a fade or slice position.
  • How are you gripping the club? A proper grip is neutral, where both hands form a perfect “V” down the shaft. Yet it is one of those things that I notice golfers tinkering with all the time.
  • Don’t choke your club to death. If your club had to breath would you have strangled it by now? Your grip should only be as tight as is necessary to keep the club from leaving your hands during the swing without turning in your hands during impact.
  • Check where your golf ball is positioned in your stance. If the golf ball is to far back in your stance, then you will make contact with the ball with the face of the club being open. This will cause a push, slice every time. If the ball is to far forward in your stance, then you will more than likely pull, hook the ball.

The problem is so widespread that one golfer dedicated his time to a study of golf slices and created a guide to help people eliminate this problem and open up their opportunity for rapid improvements in their game.

He has named his method the ‘Dave Way’. It is a well respected method for getting many distraught golfers back on track hitting shots that land in the fairway.

If you have a problem with slicing the ball you need to address the issue with the help of the information that is available in Dave’s eBook.

By pinpointing what you are doing wrong, rather than guessing and possibly messing up more of your game, you can target the most common flaws that lead to this problem.

Just like practice can improve your short game, eliminating your slice when you drive will result in more distance and the ability to ensure that your approach to the green won’t be coming from somewhere out in the rough.
