5 Ways to Get More Enjoyment Out of Playing

We all love the playing golf, but sometimes it is just as they say, a good walk spoiled.  It doesn’t have to be that way for the average golfer.

Here are 5 ways to enjoy playing golf more.

1.) Don’t play the back tees – Just playing golf can be a challenge of its own. Unless you are at least a 10 handicap or lower, why bother making the golf course even harder than it has to be.  If your average round is in the 90′s or higher, it makes no sense to make the course more difficult than it needs to be.  Play the white tees and take the extra level of anxiety out of the equation.

2.) Improve your lie – When you’re playing golf recreationally, there is no need to play by the strict rules unless you are tracking your handicap.  The average round of golf would end up being 5 or 6 hours long on almost every golf course you would play.

Golfers would end up returning to the tee all day because of a lost ball or hitting a shot out of bounds.  So if bend the rules to save time, why not bend them to improve your lie.  This is something you can actually benefit from.  Play winter rules all the time.

3.) Play different challenges – Instead playing the same match with your buddies, compete in categories other than score.  Here are a few examples:

Most fairways hit

Fewest putts per side and for the round

Most 1 putts during the round

Closest to the pin on par 3’s

Most greens in regulation

4.)  If it is your honor, take it – You just birdied the hardest (or easiest) hole on the golf course, it’s your tee it up first, you earned it, take it.  Challenge yourself to get a birdie on the next hole.  You will be surprised at how often you can string two birdies together, if you are actually trying to get two birdies in a row.

5.) Adjust your expectations – If you are an average golfer, then you are probably only playing golf once or twice per week.  In addition to that, you don’t get to practice as much as you would like.

Be honest with yourself.  You can’t think that your game is going to be as sharp as it could be.  Instead of beating up on yourself for a poor shot or round, just enjoy the round.  Even the pros have bad days.

Playing golf should be fun, take the pressure off and enjoy your next round.
