Playing Golf in Bad Weather – Part 3

playing golfPlaying golf in cold weather will affect every aspect of your game more than playing the rain or wind. Be prepared to keep yourself as warm as possible out on the golf course.

Some of the clothing changes you will probably make are wearing thermal clothing under your clothes and your rain pants on top of your slacks. You will want to wear a turtleneck or a sweater plus a windbreaker or a rain jacket.

Remember, you can always take something off if you get too warm. You should also wear a ski cap to keep your head warm and consider getting some hand warmer packs or bring a set of winter gloves to keep your hands warm.

  • You will need to make sure you warm up your muscles. Be sure to do about 10 minutes of stretching before you play. I would also consider walking the golf course to keep warm. Not only will this help keep your body temperature up, you will get a better feel for the course.
  • Remember, your golf ball won’t travel as far in the cold. A cold ball will feel hard around the green but; will not be affected by the cold as much as with a full shot.
  • Consider carrying a thermos of hot chocolate, hot tea or soup broth. Having something warm to drink will help with keeping you warm. If you are going to carry coffee, you may want to brew some decaf; caffeinated might affect your play.

Playing golf in bad weather is all about being properly prepared. Make sure to check the weather forecast before leaving the house. If lightning is in the forecast, consider postponing your round.

If lightning playing golfmoves in while out on the course, get off the course and back to the clubhouse until it passes. Most Country Clubs and golf courses have weather monitoring devices and will sound an alarm when the weather dictates.

If you have an idea of what to expect and you know the golf course you are going to play, you can map out a game plan for the day.

Finally, prepare yourself mentally for playing golf in bad weather. Know that your round will probably play longer than usual. Recognize that no matter how prepared you are for the weather, it can and will change.
