Putting Golf Strokes and Grips

puttingUnderstanding how putting golf strokes and grips affect your golf game has got to be the most important lesson you can learn.

Playing golf is really all about scoring. Some think that if you can drive the golf ball a country mile then you will score well. Others think that if you have a strong short game then you will shoot low scores. When it comes down to it, putting is the most important aspect of game.

Think about it… One of the most common saying that I have ever heard in golf is “Drive for Show and Putt for Dough”.  This little saying nails it.

Not too long ago I started looking at ways to improve my putting.  I felt that if I could shave 3 or 4 putts off my game that I would take a lot of pressure off the rest of my game.

I started watching videos and listening to what professional golfers do to improve their putting game.  I was surprised to learn that many of the top men and women golfers struggled with their putting.

It seems that the most common issues have to do with putting golf strokes and grips.  I have always had a tendency to let my wrists breakdown during the follow thru.  Although it was not much, it still would cause my putts to go off target a bit.

I picked up a couple of ideas that I have been working with that are having a positive effect.

First, I have always used the grip that my putter came with.  I never really gave it much thought, but after some research I found that changing my grip to a larger grip gave me a bit more feel by allowing me to have a lighter grip on my putter.

I started practicing my putting with a golf ball between my putter gripputting and the palm of my right hand.  This has helped me to keep my wrists from breaking down.

These two things have made a difference in my putting and I am now seeing better results.

Knowing that putting can either make or break your round, this should be the place where you focus your practice.  The best part is, you can practice putting just about anywhere.
