Golf Digest Magazine Goes High Tech

smartphoneI just opened the latest issue of Golf Digest and the Editor’s Letter caught me by surprise. Apparently Golf Digest has decided to take high tech to the next level in a big way.

I was amazed to see that the world of golf, or at least Golf Digest, is now embracing cell phones on the golf course. Not only that, but they are now bar coding all of their tips and lessons in their magazine. If you have a smart phone you can download a free application, take a picture of the barcode and then retrieve the tip or lesson to your cell phone. Take it to the practice range or worse, to the golf course.

I understand that a lot of business is conducted on the golf course, so we have to tolerate the intrusion of cell phones, but can you imagine being out on the golf course with someone that says “Wait a minute I have to retrieve a tip on my cell phone so I know how to play this shot”.

I can see it now, instead of having an enjoyable 4 hour round of golf with clients or friends, we are now going to be looking at 5 or 6 hour marathons. Even if there is no one in your group that is doing this, what about the groups in front of you?

Will this help the game of golf or will it hurt it? Only time will tell.

Let us know what you think, take a moment to answer our poll question.

golf-scorecardOne of the simplest things that you can do to improve your scores and lower your handicap is to keep track of your shots. When you are out playing a round of golf, do you track how many of your tee shots were in the fairway? What about how many greens you reach in regulation? The one statistic that I think is even more important is tracking the number of putts you take per hole.

You have to have noticed that when watching golf on TV, the announcers discuss these statistics when talking about how a player is performing for the week and year. If these stats are so important for the Pros, shouldn’t they be important for amateurs?

We are all trying to lower are scores and improve our game. Most will spend time working on their swing on the driving range. Some will work on their short game and some will work on their putting techniques. These are all important, but do you know which is the most important for you?

When you are playing golf, carry your own card and take the time to record your shots. You will find that a couple of things will come from this exercise.

One, you will be able to analyze your round more effectively. Knowing whether you are taking 36 or more putts for 18 holes will tell you volumes, as will knowing how many fairways you hit or how many greens you hit in regulation.

Two, because you are focusing on evaluating your game, you are more likely to be focused on your game as a whole. Believe it or not, you will probably shoot a lower score.

Three, you will know where to focus your practice. Knowing that you are averaging, say 39 putts per Putting Practiceround tells you that if you spend time practicing your putting that you will improve your scores quickly. If missing greens left or right is your problem, then you know that practicing your short game is where you should invest practice time.

Practice is important, but the right practice is even more important. Invest the time into analyzing your game and your scores will improve quickly. Once you have improved the weakest part of your game, then turn your practice to the next weak link in your game.

We are all hunting for a better game, even the pros, so use the tools and techniques the pros use.

It is such a beautiful sight when you launch that perfect Tee shot. You know the one, straight down the fairwayPurePoint Golf Driver DVD with lots of loft and carry. I always appreciate a good tee shot, especially when it’s mine.

Tell the truth, when you walk out onto the first tee, what are you thinking? I know that most Golfers including Professionals are thinking “Let me hit this Drive Long and Straight and in the fairway”.

What you do on the first tee will more than likely dictate how the rest of your round will play out.

Hit a good drive and your confidence is up and you are ready to take on the golf course and all of its challenges. Hit it poorly and you will be wondering what to expect next.

If you are like most amateur golfers, you have been searching for the answer to Launching Drives consistently down the fairway with pin-point accuracy. There is probably nothing more frustrating for the average golfer than inconsistency on tee.

Like most golfers, you’ve more than likely tried everything to improve your game. You have spent thousands on new clubs, taken numerous lessons, spent hours and hours practicing at the driving range or bought different golf balls. The more you try the more frustrated you become when none of this seems to make any difference. Read the rest of this entry
